Department of Commerce

The Department of Commerce of Khalsa College, Garhdiwala was established in 1997 to educate the students regarding the financial, economic and business opportunities available in this field. Keeping in view the rising interest of the students towards commerce and its ever-increasing opportunities, the department was upgraded into a Post-Graduate Department in 2016 to give the students of this field the highest education facility in the area.

The objectives of the department are:

  • To educationally enable the students towards Business and Commerce Opportunities.
  • To achieve professional excellence through Quality Education.
  • To enable the students from the rural areas to gain knowledge about the present world of Commerce and Business Management.
  • To professionally enable the enthusiastic students for employability in the competitive modern world.
  • To aware the student about opportunities in further higher studies.

The Post-Graduate department of commerce is among the largest departments of the college with an ever increasing upward trend. The Department is housed in a separate newly built block on the first floor adjoining the main library of the college. There are spacious, well-lit and well-ventilated rooms for the students so that the learning ambience matches the quality education being imparted to them. The Department has well experienced and highly qualified faculty. Three faculty members are pursuing Ph.D., one is M.Phil and one is having ICWA as an additional degree. The main learning resources of the Department comprises of more than 1000 standard books of foreign and Indian authors in the main library. The Department has its own departmental library for the poor and needy students. The College has a Wi-Fi campus and there are separate computers available in the library so that the teachers and students can access the e-content. The Department has subscribed various national and international journals, magazines and newspapers related to commerce field for the benefit of the faculty and the students.

The teachers make use of ICT to supplement their lectures by using audio-visual aids. The students are also encouraged to enhance their skills through assignments, projects, group discussions and presentations. Regular class tests and periodical house tests of the students are taken to map their performance and suggest the areas where improvement is required. The assessment of the students is made on the basis of these tests, their attendance in class and their performance and participation in presentations, project works and group discussions. The parents and guardians of the students are periodically informed regarding the performance of their wards.

The students are encouraged to take part in extra-curricular and extension activities for the overall development of their personality. Our students have brought laurels to the department by excelling in zonal and inter-zonal youth festivals. Departmental seminars and quiz contests are organized to showcase their learning skills. Various lectures of experts are arranged to enlighten them. The teachers and the students keep pace with the recent developments by attending various international and national seminars and conferences.

The department organizes various educational, historical and religious trips from time to time to give the students and teachers a break from the routine and to recharge and rejuvenate them mentally and physically.

The Department takes a good care for the placement of the students after the completion of their education. They are informed of the job and placement opportunities available as per their qualification. The Department makes arrangement and takes the students to various Job Fests to give them an exposure to the prevalent trends and needs. Proper record of the pass out students is maintained in the department and they are also informed of the available opportunities in jobs from time to time.

The admission to the Under-Graduate and Post-Graduate classes is as per Panjab University, Chandigarh norms. The procedure is transparent and elaborately explained in the prospectus and the college website.

The Department identifies the slow-learners in each class and the gap is bridged with the meritorious students adopting slow-learners individually. The teachers take a good care of the slow-learners thorough

  • Special scholarships are available for poor, needy and meritorious students. Besides this, SC/BC Scholarship is available for the students that is provided by the government.

Future Plans of the Department are:

  • The Department intends to start special guidance classes to enhance career awareness among the students.
  • The Department intends to set up a Special computer lab for the Commerce students.
  • Faculty members along with the students will be encouraged to take MOOC Courses.
  • Further Enhancement of ICT/Audio-Visual aids in the Department.
