English department of Khalsa College, Garhdiwala came into existence with inception of the college . English is offered as compulsory as well as elective subject at the undergraduate level.

The department has well experienced and highly qualified faculty. Dynamic and efficient faculty members are actively involved in teaching of all classes of Arts, Humanities, Science and Commerce. There are three regular assistant professors in the department. Since its commencement, the department has been working passionately for teaching this international language to the students or rural background. Diligent teachers provide excellent teaching and assessment on the basis of syllabus prescribed by Panjab University, Chandigarh. The main learning resource of the department is 1830 books of foreign and Indian authors. The department has its own departmental library for the poor and needy students.

There is sufficient reading material available for the students in the college library particularly of English language including creative books belonging to all genres poetry, novels, short-story, biography, autobiography, travelogues etc, dictionaries, reference books. In addition to this the books related to literary criticism, linguistics and phonetics are also available to enable the students to become competent in English language and literature. The students are encouraged to enhance their skills through assignments, projects, group discussions and regular class tests. The assessment of the students is made on the basis of these tests , their attendance in the class and their performance and participation in presentations and group discussions. Guest lectures, debates, group discussions, quiz competitions and creative writing on interdisciplinary themes are the integral part of the curriculum. The English literary society named Shakespearean Literary Society has been formed with the purpose to inculcate interest for literature among students.

Students of English department participate in NSS camps, NCC, Red Ribbon Club, Blood donation camps organized in the college, youth festivals and other college functions. The students of the department have brought laurels to the department by excelling in the youth festivals .Strength of the department is the quality education being provided by the teachers. The teachers of the department try to understand the problems of the students regarding the subject and meet them accordingly. Being aware of the fact that the students came from a rural background having a weak base in English language .The biggest challenge of the teachers of the department remains to make them competent in the language. So that they can stand confidently and excel their careers in whatever field they want to in life. Opportunity for the students of the department of English is in the field of teaching profession, research and it helps them in almost all competitive exams.

  • Undertook UGC, New Delhi funded Minor Research Project titled, “Printing Press and Development of Punjabi Language, 1849-1919” for the amount of Rs. 1,10,000/ in April 2010.
