The Red Cross idea was founded in 1859, by Henry Dunant, a young Swiss man, who came into focus during the bloody battle in Solferino, Italy, between the armies of imperial Austria and the Franco-Sardinian alliance. Some 40,000 men lay dead or dying on the battlefield and the wounded were lacking medical attention. World Red Cross Red Crescent Day is celebrated on 8 May each year. This date is the anniversary of the birth of Henry Dunant (born 8 May 1828), the founder of International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) and the recipient of the first Nobel Peace Prize. Red Cross Society was established in khalsa college, Garhdiwala on 2003-04.In this year, 45 volunteers were enrolled. In the year 2015-16 Red Cross volunteers participated in Two day State level Camp on the Birth Anniversary of Bhai Ghanayiya ji at Shri Anandpur Sahib on 20-21 Sept., 2015. Volunteers visited Mata Naina Devi Temple also. The District Youth Welfare Society also conducted One day awareness campaign the college. Adv. Sunil Prabhakar and S.Harbhajan Singh made volunteers aware of the social problems and also told about how to overcome those problems. |
Red Cross Symbol
Today, the red cross emblem continues to be an internationally recognized symbol of protection and neutrality; used to identify military medical services as well as the people, programs and objects connected with the humanitarian activities of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement.
