  About the Department:

Khalsa College Garhdiwala, located in Hoshiarpur, was established in 1966. The Department of Economics has been an integral part of the college since its inception. Economics is offered as an elective subject for undergraduate students, and the department was initially founded to meet the educational needs of students from the rural Kandi area of Hoshiarpur district. The department’s primary mission is to provide a comprehensive, up-to-date, and integrated educational experience in Economics. It aims to equip students with the skills to engage with local, national, and global issues while instilling moral and ethical values related to citizenship and community service. As Economics is an interdisciplinary field, it is offered as part of the curriculum in B.A., M.Com, B.Com, and previously in B.Sc. Agriculture. The undergraduate program in Economics provides students with a solid foundation in economic theory and practical knowledge in applied economic analysis. It also introduces students to shifts in development paradigms, particularly in the context of India’s pre and post independence periods. A variety of teaching methods are employed to enhance students’ learning abilities. Regular tests, group discussions, and educational tours are organized to further enrich the academic experience. Additionally, students are encouraged to complete projects and assignments relevant to their syllabus, and class-level quiz competitions are also held. Students from the Department of Economics actively participate in a range of extracurricular activities, including cultural, religious, and social events, awareness rallies, blood donation camps, and seminars. They are also involved in NSS and NCC camps, contributing to the community and developing a well-rounded personality.
